Extra credit-The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life--Dengqin

"The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life" is a classic work by the renowned sociologist Erving Goffman. This book is based on personal experience, social observation, and empirical research, exploring in detail how people present themselves in social life and the impact of this self-presentation on social interaction and interpersonal relationships.

Goffman proposed the theory of "dramaturgical self-presentation," which suggests that people act like actors in social life, performing different roles in different situations and presenting different images of themselves through their performance. He elaborated on various self-presentation strategies in different social situations, including clothing, language, facial expressions, body postures, and use of space, and discussed their functions and limitations.

After reading this book, I deeply appreciated Goffman's profound thinking and insightful perspective. He analyzed how people present themselves in different social situations from a sociological perspective and explored the impact of self-presentation on interpersonal relationships, social order, and cultural identity. Meanwhile, his research methods were rigorous. He collected a large amount of empirical data through field observation and in-depth interviews, providing a solid foundation for his theory.

During the reading process, I thought of a question, which is the relationship between self-presentation and authenticity. Goffman emphasized the roles people play in social life, which are sometimes not their true selves. So why do people perform these roles? What is the relationship between the roles played and the true self? When there is a conflict between self-presentation and the true self, what choices do people make? These questions need to be explored and answered in practice.

In summary, Erving Goffman's "Presentation of Self in Everyday Life" is a highly inspiring book, which not only allowed me to understand in-depth the self-presentation strategies of people in social life, but also made me reflect on my own self-presentation and interaction with others.
