Extra credit— Project One: Interaction Observation

                       Project One: Interaction Observation

Story :

On Sunday night, CC (Observer) and KK (Performer) went to a restaurant in the

center of the city for dinner. The restaurant is doing very well and is packed every weekend. It is a large, elegant western restaurant with frescoes on the walls and dining Spaces divided into private rooms and halls. CC (Observer) and KK (Performer) choose to sit in the hall for dinner. The hall was full of people. There were young couples, old couples, and and people who come with their parents. Just after ordering food, KK (Performer) began to tell CC (Observer) that she was broken up by her boyfriend. As she talked, KK (Performer) became more and more excited and beat the table with her hands, and her expression became more and more ferocious. The guests sitting around CC (Observer) and KK (Performer) also seemed to feel the difference and looked at KK (Performer) side. After a while, KK (Performer) suddenly loses her temper and starts crying loudly, and CC (Observer) notices that the whole hall is watching. Some pick up their mobile phones to record, others were whispering, as if discussing something, and some offer KK (Performer) paper to comfort her. The waiter who heard the crying came to inquire about what had happened. The waiter who understood the situation seemed to have told the other service personnel the news. Soon the news seemed to spread to the kitchen. After a while, the waiter brought a hot drink as if to comfort KK (Performer). On the way,

CC(Observer) went to the bathroom and passed by the private room and found that everyone didn't know what was happening in the hall, still laughing and laughing. The cleaners are also cleaning carefully and are not interested in it. CC(Observer) finds that real life is like a stage, and KK (Performer) can dominate the audience's reactions.

I worked as an observer on this project to see how people around me reacted to the performers.Combining Goffman's elements and analyzing how these elements are embodied in the story. The following is my analysis:

1. Manipulation of regions : This story takes place in a western restaurant, which is divided into two dining places: private rooms and large halls. The hall was filled with young couples, old couples, people with their parents, etc., forming a complex social scene.

2. Roles : CC is the observer and KK is the performer. KK told CC that he was broken up by his boyfriend, her emotions gradually became agitated, and finally she broke down and cried. Other diners, waiters and cleaners are the spectators and participants.

3. Teams : In this story, different characters form different teams. CC and KK are one team, diners and servers are another. The interactions and influences between these teams constitute the complexity of this social scene.

4. Performance : KK's loss of emotional control can be seen as a performance. She dominates the audience's reaction through her actions and emotions. The reactions of diners and waiters can also be seen as their performances. They express their care and support for KK through their actions and words.
