Extra credit: Goffman's Theory Analysis of The Sting movie

"The Sting" tells the story of 1936, in Joliet, near Chicago, three crooks set a trap to cheat a passer-by out of a staggering amount of money. The head of the fraud ring, Russa, had a young goon named Hooker. Russa treated him like a son and recommended him to his friend Kondolph in Chicago.A few days later, Roza was assassinated by a gang. Hooker vows to avenge him and goes to Chicago to seek Kondolph's help. Kondolph and Hook went about trying to find out about Ronagon, the leader of the underworld, and exploited his weakness for playing cards and racing horses.

I analyzed several elements of Goffman based on the film

Team:There were two men who were trying to cheat a pair of shoes, and they ended up cheating them out of $5,000. These two men can be seen as a team, sharing information and trusting each other.

The shill:Luther pretended to be a member of the audience, saying that the money was his wife's medical bills, but was actually a member of the performance team, in order to seduce the victim.

backstage:So Hook happily took the flowers to see his sweetheart in the performance, Hook stood backstage watching the woman perform, and people backstage laughing and talking, this is the audience can not see the area.

Communication out of character:This dancer in the front and backstage performance is very different, she dances enthusiastically, in order not to let the audience find flaws, she poked her head backstage and Hook's tone is not good, at this time the audience did not know what happened.

The "service specialist:After the dancer performs, people backstage dress her up and can be seen as service specialists, who are invited to the back area to work for the performance team.

Treatment of absentees:The dancer then complained to the others that her partner had missed four more beats during the performance. This can be viewed as an absentee treatment.

Team collusion: At the casino, the casino owner and a man in black collude, make eye contact, operate the wheel, and finally make Hook lose three thousand dollars.
