Extra credit : Discussion of the Casablanca film (Jiyeong Lim)

In the movie Casablanca, I'm going to analyze the political background and topic and a discussion.

Casablanca is a film set in Casablanca, Morocco, a neutral country during World War II, and its political background and theme play an important role.

1. Fight against Nazi Germany: In the movie, the main characters participate in the resistance movement to fight against Nazi Germany. Through this, the film emphasizes the importance of the resistance movement and the fight for independence and freedom. The resistance movement symbolizes the power of all human beings to protect world peace and freedom against German rule.

2. Contradictions in Neutral Nations: Casablanca strives to maintain neutrality, but the progress of World War II reveals the limits and contradictions of neutrality. The movie deals with the difficulty and conflict of making justice and moral choices even in the situation of a neutral country. This shows the complexity of the concept of neutrality and the difficulty of making the right choice while maintaining neutrality.

3. Refugees and humanity: the film shows many European refugees escaping through Casablanca. This raises serious concerns about the refugee issue and humanity. The film emphasizes the pain and hope of refugees, and the importance of human solidarity and sympathy. The stories of refugees stimulate humanity and compassion and convey a deep impression to the audience.

4. Love and sacrifice: the romance between Isa and Rickle in the film explores the theme of love and sacrifice with a political background. The director requires Rickle to sacrifice himself, and their love shows a difficult choice and confrontation that considers social responsibility and ideals as well as personal desires. Through this, the film explores the power of love and personal desire, and the conflict between sacrifice and duty.

I think we can watch 'Casablanca' and discuss what role war and political elements play in this movie, what their importance is, and what they think about the political theme and message of this movie.

Against the backdrop of the time of the war, it emphasized pain at the time and showed problems caused by the war, and more dramatically conveyed symbolic elements such as humanity, love and sacrifice. It also shows that Casablanca's political background and theme, as analyzed above, carry a deep message about social problems and human ideals beyond simple romance or adventure films.
